One killed, two arrested in Chiang Mai drug bust
Narcotics suppression police killed one drug trader and arrested two others and seized 120,000 methamphetamine pills during a sting operation in Mae Taeng district of Chiang Mai province on Thursday morning, police said.
An ambush was set up after police decoys contacted some drug traders and arranged to buy 120,000 meth pills at a cost of 4 million baht. They arranged to hand over the drugs and cash at a bridge near Moo 3 village in tambon Khilek of Mae Taeng district on the Chiang Mai - Pai road.
When the traffickers arrived at the spot in a pick-up truck police emerged from hiding and demanded they halt for a search.
The dealers fled in roadside bushes. One of them, identified later as Somkiat Assawamethi, 27, of Tak's Phop Phra district, opened fire at police. They retaliated and Somkiat was killed, shot twice in the chest and once in the head, police said.
The two other traffickers surrenders - Prateep Laohang, 22, and Uraiporn Yangyuenpiyarat, 38, of Chiang Mai's Chiang Dao district. All three of them are ethnic Hmong.
The police found 120,000 meth pills in the back of the truck.

CHIANG MAI — A 53-year-old German man accused of selling illicit drugs was arrested and some speed pills were seized at his house in Mae Rim district on Friday.
A team of local police led by Mae Rim police chief Pol Col Adul Somnuek raided the house in tambon Don Kaew and arrested Thomas Leiner, a German national, after 78 speed pills and two packs of methamphetamine were found inside his house, said police.
The suspect has been charged with possessing illicit drugs with intent to sell.
The arrest came after police caught Theeradet Chaichana, 25, of Chiang Mai, at an apartment in Muang district of this northern province on Thursday after some speed pills were found in his possession.
The man confessed he had bought the drugs from the German man. This prompted police to investigate and later obtained a court warrant to search the accused foreigner's house.
Mr Leiner, who stayed in the house with his Thai wife, told police that he bought the drugs from a small drug dealer at a nightspot on Loy Khor Road in downtown Chiang Mai for his own use and for sale, mostly to foreigners. He allegedly confessed he had sold the illicit drugs for a long time.
He was held in police custody for legal action.

NARATHIWAT — Police have seized more than 680,000 methamphetamine pills, or ya ba, hidden in a car’s boot and arrested a drug suspect following a raid in Sungai Kolok district.
A joint team comprising local police and members of the 447th border patrol unit searched a home owned by Paoyee Sa-lae, 52, in Moo 3 village of Muno sub-district on Monday after they received a tip-off that a lot of ya ba pills were hidden there.
They found 114 bundles containing 684,000 speed pills hidden in the boot of a Narathiwat-registered Toyota Vios parked in a garage. The drugs have an estimated street value of 82 million baht.
Mr Paoyee denied any involvement and said the car belonged to his younger brother Samran Baka.
The team searched Mr Samran’s house opposite to his brother’s and found about 4,000 meth pills hidden in the house. Mr Samran had fled arrest on a Ford Ranger with a red licence plate, according to police.
An investigation is underway to locate Mr Samran and find more people involved. Pol Lt Gen Chalermphan Arjonboon, commissioner of the Southern Border Provinces Police Operation Center, will hold a news conference on Tuesday to release more details about the case.

Big drug haul in bus passengers' bags
Three men were arrested and 110,000 methamphetamine pills and 28 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine seized in a search of a passenger bus in Li district of Lamphun province early on Wednesday.
Soldiers from the 2nd Infantry Battalion and Li district police manning the drug checkpoint at Ban Wang Din in tambon Pa Phai stopped the Bangkok-bound Transport Company bus from Chiang Mai's Chom Thong district for a search shortly after midnight.
They found drugs in three suitcases - the first with 11 packages totalling 110,000 meth pills, the second with 12kg of crystal meth and the third with another 16kg.
The owners of the three suitcases - Wichian Laota, Kowit Laota and Sompol Sae Lee - were arrested.
Police alleged the three confessed to being hired for 220,000 baht to deliver the drugs in the three suitcases to a client in Ayutthaya province.
They were charged with having illicit drugs in possession with intent to sell.

Five members of a drug gang have been arrested in Chumphon and 366,000 speed pills hidden in a second vehicle seized in Prachuap Khiri Khan after a long car chase, police said on Tuesday.
Theerawut Phorsawang, 25, Prawit Buddee, 28, Ekkawee Wilairat, 30, Damrong Srichuen, 37 and Somkhuan Sutthikarn, 37, all natives of Nakhon Phanom, were initially stopped at Dan Pla checkpoint in tambon Khao Chairat in Pathiu district of Chumphon.
Pol Lt Gen Thesa Siriwatho, chief of Provincial Police Region 8, told a media conference on Tuesday that police did not find any drugs when they searched the white Isuzu MU-7 utility vehicle with a Bangkok licence plate the suspects were travelling in. The passengers claimed they were heading to a wedding party in Songkhla’s Hat Yai.
Then, a white Mitsubishi Pajero with a Bangkok licence plate was seen approaching the checkpoint from the same direction. The driver suddenly made a quick U-turn and fled. Police gave chase. The vehicle was later abandoned at a resort in neighbouring Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Bang Saphan district.
A search found 366,000 speed pills hidden in the vehicle. The driver, a gang member identified later as Opit Buddee, made good his escape, police said. The seized drugs had an estimated street value of 110 million baht, according to police.
The five suspects detained in Chumphon confessed they had been hired for 500,000 baht to smuggle the drugs from a central province to a delivery point in Hat Yai district, Pol Lt Gen Thesa said.

More than 4,000 suspects in old and new criminal cases have been arrested and more than 100 weapons and some 100,000 speed pills seized during a one-week crackdown in nine provinces of the lower North.
Provincial Region 6 commissioner Chanasit Wattanarangkul told a media briefing in Phitsanulok on Tuesday a total of 4,374 suspects in old and new cases had been arrested by the time the police operation ended on Monday.
Police also seized 123 weapons and 101,682 speed pills, Pol Lt Gen Chanasit said.
The police operation, between Nov 17 and 23, was launched ahead of the Loy Krathong festival on Wednesday night.
The nine provinces targetted were: Phitsanulok, Sukhothai, Uttaradit, Kamphaeng Phet, Tak, Phichit, Uthai Thani, Nakhon Sawan and Phetchabun
The suspects arrested were wanted for offences including physical and sexual assault, theft, illicit drugs, weapons possession, street racing and illegal sales of fireworks.
