Speed pills worth B150m seized, 10 arrested

A large quantity of methamphetamine pills worth over 150 million baht on the street have been seized in two drug busts in which 10 suspects were caught in Prachuap Khiri Khan and Khon Kaen.

Five suspects were arrested and 96,000 methamphetamine pills seized at Pran Buri customs duty checkpoint in Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Pran Buri district on Thursday afternoon, Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) commander Rewat Klinkesorn said at a press conference on Friday.

The five, two men and three women, were identified as Abdulloh Luemae, 21, Suwirat Nguan-seng, 34, Leena Luemae, 23, Jaebeedor Sama-ae, 40, and Doleeyor Jaewae.

Their arrest followed an investigation which revealed the suspects were about to deliver illicit drugs to the deep South.

In the second case, five men were apprehended and 600,000 speed pills seized from them in Khon Kaen’s Phon district.

The suspects were identified as Komol Namprachan, 33, Thongkham Promwong, 44, Natthapong Promwong, 33, Prasopchok Phochaem, 29, and an 18-year-old youth.

The suspects were heading for Bangkok when they were caught. The seized pills were smuggled from Myanmar and were destined for Malaysia, police said. The gang had used four vehicles along the smuggling route.

Police also seized another 72,730 speed pills from small drug sellers in eight other cases in Khon Kaen and Chon Buri.

Pol Lt Gen Rewat said the seized drugs came from a Wa drugs trafficking gang in Myanmar.

In Kachanaburi, a one-armed man and his wife were arrested after 19,800 speed pills were found in their possession during a police search of a passenger van on Thursday morning.

Khwanpradit Phoonploy, 37, and his wife Rattana Putpradit, 35, both from Ratchaburi, were travelling in a passenger van from Kanchanaburi to the Three Pagoda checkpoint when a team of soldiers and police stopped the van at a checkpoint in Sangkhla Buri around 6am on Thursday, Pol Maj Gen Kamolsanti Klanbut, Kanchanaburi provincial chief said on Friday.

Four packages of the drugs were found concealed down the front of the man's pants and six other packages were found around his wife’s waist.

Pol Col Khwanchai Theerakul, chief of Sangkhla Buri police, said Mr Khwanpradit told police he had been hired for 50,000 baht to smuggle the drugs. The suspect said it was the first time he had done it, but police were not convinced.

Criminal records showed the couple had been previously involved in the drug trade.

Police arrest 11, seize meth, guns

Police have arrested 11 drug suspects and seized almost 200,000 speed pills and their assets worth more than 100 million baht, in a new government crackdown on drugs.

Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) police said Sunday nine drug suspects were arrested last week, while another two were arrested yesterday. Pol Maj Gen Sompong Chingduang, NSB deputy chief, said the government had launched a fresh campaign against drugs, targeting 38 major drug dealers in 46 drug-ridden areas nationwide.

In Bangkok yesterday, police arrested alleged drug dealers Sarocha Ruang-Urai, 28, at Kunalai Village in Bang Khunthian, and Pipat Tham-in, 34, at Signature Village in Bang Kae district. A land deed, a car, a condominium unit, and a motorcycle belonging to the suspects were all seized, said the deputy chief.

The arrests came after police followed the money trail of a drug suspect caught in January, and discovered he had transferred money to Ms Sarocha's and Mr Pipat's bank accounts.

On Friday, Chiang Mai police arrested three men in Mae Rim district in possession of 5kg of crystal ice and 60,000 methamphetamine pills, which were seized as evidence. On the same day, police nabbed Yorla Saekhla in Chiang Dao district, who was found to have 10kg of crystal ice in his possession, they said.

NSB police also arrested drugs suspects Ekkachai Phukaew, Piyaphong Phukaew and Sundusit Cheochatwongsa, on warrants issued in March. They did not say where the arrests were made.

In Chumsaeng district, Nakhon Sawan, police confiscated a sack containing 96,000 methamphetamine pills. No arrests were made. In Rattaphum district, Songkhla, NSB police arrested Dao Suwanroj, 35, and seized 90,000 methamphetamine pills and firearms in his possession.

In Si Sakhon district, Narathiwat, police apprehended Peeralee Seumae, and also seized 70 speed pills and five guns as evidence.

1.4m meth pills seized in Mae Sai

CHIANG RAI — Police have seized 1.4 million methamphetamine pills with an estimated street value of 280 million baht in a sting operation in Mae Sai district.

A drug gang were to deliver the speed pills to undercover police posing as buyers at a petrol station on Saturday but they may have been aware of the sting and decided to discard a large bag packed with the drugs and fled at the last minute.

However, police have been able to identify the suspects and are now trying to locate them, Pol Lt Gen Thanitsak Theerasawat, commander of the Provincial Police Region 8, told a news conference.

The confiscated drugs belonged to a Myanmar drug gang led by Lt Col Yi Se, who is wanted in Thailand and has a 5-million-baht reward on his head. The contraband was destined for Phitsanulok, and if it had reached there its value on the streets would have been up to 280 million baht.

Pol Lt Gen Thanitsak said police had conducted surveillance and gathered intelligence in the border district of Mae Sai for two months before being able to contact the gang members.

2 drug traffickers caught, 100kg of ‘ya ice’ seized in Chumphon

Two members of a drug-trafficking gang have been arrested and 100kg of crystal methamphetamine worth about 300 million baht seized in Chumphon’s Pathiu district, police said on Saturday.

Songkran Omkorkul, 32, a resident of Udon Thani’s Ban Dung district, and Somchai Thajampa of Roi Et’s Kaset Wisai district were taken to a police press conference in Chumphon on Saturday.

Police also displayed 100 packs of crystal methamphetamine, weighing 100kg in total, a black Isuzu pickup truck, and a white Toyota Camry sedan seized from them. The drugs had a market value of over 300 million baht, Thai media reported on Saturday.

Pol Maj Gen Somchai Nimitbovornkul, deputy commander of Police Region 8, said it was the largest seizure of the illicit drugs in the South. Authorities would extend the investigation to arrest other gang members.

The seizure of the drugs came after Chumphon police tried to stop the black pickup truck, driven by Mr Songkran, at a checkpoint in Pathiu district. However, the driver refused to comply and sped away, prompting police to follow him.

While the officers were chasing, the same pickup truck emerged from a soi near the entrance of the agricultural promotion and cooperatives office 4, about 4km from the checkpoint. This prompted the police to cut in front to block the vehicle.

Mr Songkran was caught on the spot and confessed that he had fled to hide the drugs at a scrub inside the soi. He was taken to see the hideout of the drugs where authorities found the crystal meth hidden in five rucksacks.

Mr Songkran told police he had been hired to smuggle the drugs from a riverbank of the Mekong River in Udon Thani’s Nong Han district. There were four vehicles used in the smuggling, with the drivers being paid 200,000 baht each.

Three of the vehicles were leading the way and drivers would alert him if there were any police checkpoints, said the suspect. The vehicles were travelling about 5km ahead of each other, he said. His pickup was the fourth vehicle, with the drugs hidden inside.

As his accomplices had told him that there were no police checkpoints, he drove the vehicle along the road, but found police were setting up a temporary checkpoint on the road. This prompted him to flee.

While police were interrogating Mr Songkran, the white Toyota Camry driven by Mr Somchai arrived at the scene as he lost contact from Songkran.

Police said the duo confessed that they had earlier made four trips to smuggle illicit drugs from the Mekong River. His gang had smuggled 200,000 speed pills in the first trip, 100kg of crystal meth in the second one, 50 kg of crystal meth in the third and another 80 kg of crystal meth in the fourth trip. Drugs in the first three trips were delivered to Ayutthaya’s Wang Noi district and the fourth trip to Phatthalung.

Speed pills worth B400m seized in Chumphon

CHUMPHON — A man has been arrested with 2.3 million methamphetamine pills with an estimated street value of 400 million baht on a highway in Muang district.

National police chief Pol Gen Somyot Poompunmuang said at a press conference on Wednesday that highway police set up a checkpoint on Highway No.4 (Petchkasem) between kilometre markers 479 and 480 on Tuesday, acting on information that a big consignment of drugs would be delivered in a pickup truck using that route.

Police found two vehicles, a Chevrolet Captiva and a Toyota Hilux Vigo which were regarded as suspicious and signalled the drivers to stop.

The Chevrolet driver, who police believe was providing protection for the Toyota in which the meth was hidden, sped away and escaped arrest. Witthaya Sopa, 47, who was driving the pickup, tried to evade the checkpoint but police blocked him with a patrol vehicle.

A search found almost 2.4 million speed pills hidden in secret compartments underneath the pickup and inside a specially-modified tailgate.

Mr Witthaya said he was hired by a drug gang via telephone to drive the drug-laden pickup from Chumphon’s Tha Sae district to Lang Suan district for 10,000 baht.

Pol Gen Somyot complimented the officers for the drug bust and after the briefing, he awarded them with cash as a gesture of moral support.
